I don't have a horse in this race. I've installed gas furnaces for 30 years and heat pumps for almost as long. Whatever you pick, I've hung my hat on both. So here's the comparison the sales guys won't give you straight.

First, plain English

A furnace burns fuel — usually natural gas — to make heat. Simple, powerful, been around forever.

A heat pump is basically an air conditioner that runs both ways. In summer it moves heat out of your house. In winter it flips around and pulls heat from the outside air into your house. One machine, heating and cooling both.

That "moves heat instead of making it" trick is why heat pumps are cheap to run. Moving heat takes a lot less energy than making it from scratch.

The cold-weather question everyone asks

"Do heat pumps work when it's freezing?" Ten years ago, my honest answer was "eh." Today? Cold-climate models keep pumping out heat well below zero. I've put them in homes that see -10°F winters, paired with a small backup heat strip for the worst nights, and the homeowners stopped calling me — which in my business is the highest compliment there is.
